Business continuity for a private hospital

Backup and recovery design with a 15-minute RPO and a 2-hour RTO, plus a documented annual failover test.

The challenge

Starting point

An electronic health record with no proven restore and no recovery objectives agreed with the operation.

The solution

What we implemented

Redesigned database backups, a recovery site and a failover test executed and recorded in a signed report.

Results

Figures measured after go-live, compared against the project's baseline.

The electronic health record is critical: without it, the hospital stops operating. The institution had backups, but had never restored the full system.

What we did

We agreed recovery objectives with the medical board and IT, redesigned database backups, built a recovery site and ran the first failover test with the operating theatre running in parallel.

Outcome

Today the institution knows exactly how long it takes to be back online and holds the signed record of the test to present to its board and its accreditations.

For the first time we know how long it takes us to come back. That changed how we plan maintenance weekends.
